FebruaryTHINGS TO DO IN THE VEGGIE PATCH -Veges to plant: broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, leeks, onions, silverbeet and spring onions. -Plant rhubarb now to use in delicious, warm winter desserts. -Harvest earlier sowing of carrots, egg plants, peppers, tomatoes. Pick cucumbers as they mature to encourage further fruit production. -Cabbage, broccoli and leeks will be making rapid growth-keep well watered and apply Kings Pelletised Sheep Manure. THINGS TO DO IN THE FLOWER GARDEN -Flowers to plant: marigolds, petunias, asters, zinnias, Livingstone daisies and portulaca. -Continue dead heading plants that have finished flowering. -Spray fuchsias and gladioli to control thrips. Apply a mulch of peat moss, Kings compost or Pea Straw to garden beds. TREES AND SHRUBS: -Continue to spray roses to control insect pests and fungal disease. -Prune back spent flower heads from shrubs and roses that have finished blooming. -Keep watering through dry spells. THINGS TO DO IN THE FRUIT GARDEN -Feed your citrus trees with Kings Citrus Fertiliser and spray with copper to prevent verrucosis. -The Autumn harvesting of fruit begins (early-season varieties). Prune trees after harvesting. -Spray pip-fruit for coddling moth and fungal diseases. Stone-fruit for brown rots, black spot and insects. Grapes, tamarillos and tropical fruit for powdery mildew, whitefly, etc. Passion fruit for passion vine hopper. -Use bird-netting to protect ripening fruit. GENERAL INFORMATION -Avoid cutting lawns too closely-leaving some length will prevent lawn from drying out. -If you plan to sow a new lawn in autumn, begin now by spraying off weeds. -Keep watering through dry spells. Use Mulches, water storage granules, re-wetting agents and irrigation systems to help you. See Kings friendly staff for advice. -February can be a humid month. Remember that fungal diseases spread rapidly in this weather. Spray with fungicide to control fungus in your garden. Clean tools after use to prevent them carrying infections around the garden. Where possible, maintain airflow through as much of the garden as is possible, especially glasshouses.
