July

Things to be doing in YOUR garden this July...

IN THE VEGGIE PATCH...

Plant... Beetroot, broccoli, Brussels sprout, cabbage, Carrots, cauliflowers, garlic, onions, parsnip, peas, shallots, silver beet and spinach.
Protect... crops from slugs and snails with Yates Baysol.
Spray... celery, Brassica’s and other seedlings with a broad-spectrum fungicide such as Tui Eco Fungicide to control leaf spot and fungal diseases.
Feed... Side dress your plants with Kings General Garden Fertiliser.
Prepare... rhubarb and asparagus beds for planting. Seed potatoes can be sprouted in trays ready for early planting. Build up soil structure by digging in Kings Organic Compost, General Garden Fertiliser and Pelletised Sheep Manure.

IN THE FLOWER GARDEN...

Prepare... Give your favourite annuals the best start: Dig in Kings Organic Compost and Kings General Garden Fertiliser.
Sow... Alyssum, Calendula, candy tufts, Dianthus, Delphinium, Forget-me-not, Larkspur, Linaria, Lupin, Nemesia, Pansy, Snapdragon, Statice, Stock, Sweet peas, Sweet Williams and violas.
Plant... Seedlings and potted colour: Alyssum, Carnations, Cineraria, Forget-me-not, Iceland Poppies, Nemesia, Pansy, Polyanthus, Primula, viola and other winter favourites.
And Don't Forget... Gladioli corms will be arriving this month so plant immediately for spring and summer flowering.
· Choose from our huge selection on our convenient pick and mix stand.
· Stagger the planting of the corms to lengthen the flowering time.
· Feed with Kings Sheep Pellets for excellent results.
Control... slugs and snails with Yates Baysol.

IN THE FRUIT GARDEN...

Stone fruit is here and Pip fruit are arriving soon. Apple, pears, Peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines PLUS MUCH MORE! Bare root, single grafted trees and double grafted trees. Prepare the soil now with Kings Organic Compost and Kings General Garden Fertiliser. Don't forget to use Gypsum Soil-life to break up heavy clay soils along with Kings Organic Compost.
Prune... existing fruit trees, sealing the cuts with pruning paste. Clean these trees up with Yates Champ DP and Conqueror Spraying Oil 3-4weeks later. Pruning in winter will promote vigorous growth in spring so if you want to keep your trees smaller then prune in summer for shape only. This way you will reduce the vigorous production of stems and leaf and increase the production of fruit. Just make sure you do not prune off too much fruiting wood.
Also prune last season’s growth from berry canes and spray with Champ DP. Now is also the time for pruning grapes.

TREES AND SHRUBS...

Plant... Continue winter planting of trees and shrubs.
Prepare... New seasons roses are at Kings now. Prepare the soil for all plantings with Kings Organic Compost and Kings General Garden fertiliser. This is the best time to be planting these ever-popular shrubs. Kings have a great selection of Bush, climbing, classic, Austin and standard roses.
· Bush and Climbing roses including the new Blackberry Nip, a lovely deep purple HT.
· Classic and David Austin roses all your old favourites plus some unusual additions.
· Standardised roses great for a formal look.
Camellias and Rhododendrons are also now in store. Use Kings Camellia Azalea and Rhododendron Fertiliser when planting.
Spray... Roses and other deciduous trees and shrubs with Yates Champ DP and Conqueror Spraying Oil to clear up scale and other insects and protect against fungal disease.
Prune... spindly growth on hydrangeas and other perennials back to strong shoots.

INDOOR PLANTS...

Protect... Move indoor plants to warmer, well-lit positions. Elevate if they are sitting on a cold floor, and reduce watering to a minimum, but do remember that heaters and fires can make rooms very hot so some water may be required.

TRUSTED PRODUCTS TO USE IN JULY...
