Things to be doing in YOUR garden this June...

IN THE VEGGIE GARDEN...

sheep_poo_07_2.jpgSOIL PREPARATION… Build up your soil structure by digging in Kings Organic Compost, General Garden Fertiliser and Kings Pelletised sheep Manure. This will improve the natural soil structure and nutrient content. If you have a heavy clay soil or a clay layer (pan) beneath your topsoil sprinkle a good layer of Gypsum onto the soil every 6 months as this will help break up the clay particles. Use Gypsum with compost and you will encourage a more friable, free draining soil.  Click here to see more about making your own compost NOW!

PLANT... Broccoli, broad beans, cabbage, carrots, cauliflowers, onions, peas, potatoes, radish, Garlic, shallots (bulbs) and spinach. Plant lupins and mustard in vacant areas to be worked into the soil late winter. Garlic & Shallots… Yes they are in store NOW!  Click here to see more about Crop Rotation NOW!

SPRAY... Protect crops from insect pests and fungal problems. Aquaticus Glow with Champ DP, Success or Tui Eco-Pest Will control Caterpillars, White Fly, Aphids and Blight plus more. Sprinkle Yates Baysol around your plants to combat snails and slugs, Baysol is more water resistant than other baits and you need to use less to get the same or better result. For the most eco-friendly slug and snail bate use Tui Quash, safe for your pets and gives excellent results.

FEED… Liquid feed cabbage, Cauliflower and Brussels Sprouts with Kings Fast Food or Kings Tomato Food as they reach maturity. This will increase their size and help maintain good health.

PROTECT... Potatoes from frosts with Frost Cloth, available at all Kings Branches. Don’t forget frost hits often at dawn as the sun rises so make sure the sun is up and warming the plants and soil before you remove the frost cloth.

IN THE FLOWER GARDEN...

LIFT... Lift Dahlia Tubers and store in a dry place. It is safe to divide and replant perennials. Cut back daisies, geraniums and others that have finished flowering. When cutting back daisies… GET TOUGH!!!… To produce thick, lush and dense new growth you must prune back by at least ¾ of their size. It is the same with Lavender, Hebes, Hibiscus and many other fast growing shrubs.

SPRAY...
Protect your perennials against fungus and insects, spray with Tui Eco-Pest and Eco Fungicide, and mix with Aquaticus Glow for best results.

TREES AND SHRUBS…

PRUNE… Trees that have finished flowering. Prune back to a healthy growing bud or stem and seal the cuts on larger stems with Bacseal Pruning Paint to protect against disease. Always clean your secateurs and loppers with white spirits to prevent transfer of diseases, and keep them sharp to give neater cuts. Prune spindly growth out on hydrangeas and strong shoots back to 2-3 buds from the base. Prune Roses toward the end of June after top-dressing with Sulphate of Potash now.  Click here to see more about growing and pruning successful Roses NOW!

My Best Pruning Tip… Always use the secateurs with the sharp cutting blade towards the part of the plant you wish to keep, and the anvil or blunt side towards the part of the plant you wish to remove. This gives the cleanest cut surface on the part you wish to keep. Don’t forget to use Bacseal on the cut wounds to protect against disease.

PLANT… Remember that Autumn is the best time to plant trees and shrubs as the plants put all of their energies into growing roots which gives them a strong start for the coming spring. Start thinking about winter planting of roses and prepare the soil with Kings Organic Compost and General Garden Fertiliser. Kings have a huge range of flowering Camellias in store for you now, great for the garden and great to pick for a vase as well!

SPRAY… With Lime Sulphur to combat fungal disease, followed by Yates Champ Dp and Conqueror Oil or Aquaticus Glow 2-3 weeks later to combat scale, mite and other insects. Just ask at your local Kings branch and they will help you with all you need… And remember, harden off your roses in preparation for their winter prune by top dressing around your plants with Sulphate of Potash.

My Autumn Tip for Roses… clean up all the fallen leaves off the ground around the plants after your Winter Prune as this reduces disease infection next spring.

LAWNS, POTS AND GENERAL THINGS…

SPRAY… To control moss in lawns with Sulphate of Iron.

PROTECT… Delicate tropicals and sub-tropicals from frost with Frost Cloth, available at all Kings Branches.
