THINGS TO DO IN THE VEGGIE PATCH

-Veges to plant: Broccoli, beetroot, brussel sprouts, broad beans, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, leeks, lettuce, onions, silverbeet, spinach and Spring onions.

-Harvest: Pumpkin, yams, onions, potatoes and kumera. Store in a cool dry place. Brush ends of the stalks of pumpkins, squash, etc, to keep them longer.

Vacant plots can be planted with Green Manure, lupin, oat and mustard. Later when these plants are cultivated back into the soil they will provide nutrients and structure.

THINGS TO DO IN THE FLOWER GARDEN

TREES AND SHRUBS

Prune back spent flower heads from shrubs and roses that have finished blooming. Trim hedges to allow a little growth before winter sets in. Keep watering through dry spells. Think about plantings of roses, camellias, rhododendrons as they will be available in the next few months.

THINGS TO DO IN THE FRUIT GARDEN

March is the main season for harvesting, especially late stone fruit and apples. Feed your citrus trees with Kings Citrus Tree Fertiliser as they make prolific growth now. Spray grapes, tamarillo's and tropical fruit for powdery mildew, white flies, etc... Passion fruit for passionfruit hopper. Liquid feed for strong, healthy growth.

Use bird-netting to protect ripening fruit.

POT CARE

In summer you may have noted the benefit of using a saucer under your pots to help keep the water from draining away. But in times of higher rain fall we recommend taking that saucer away and using pot feet. These raise the pot off the ground and leave the drainage holes clear to let the water escape. You will have healthier plants and your soil will last longer by doing so. Also moving your pots to areas of more shelter will also help.
