Things to be doing in YOUR garden this MAY...

IN THE VEGGIE GARDEN...

IN THE FLOWER GARDEN...

Lift... Dahlia tubers and store in a dry place. Cut back daisies, geraniums and others that have finished flowering.

TREES ANS SHRUBS…

Prune… Trees that have finished flowering. Prune back to a growing bud or stem and seal the cuts on larger stems with Pruning Paste to protect against disease. Always clean your secateurs and loppers with white spirits to prevent transfer of diseases, and keep them sharp to give neater cuts.

Plant… Remember that Autumn is the best time to plant trees and shrubs as the plants put all of their energies into growing roots which gives them a strong start for the coming spring. Many plants will do a growth spurt in May before winter sets in. Give plants a little food in early May. Start thinking about winter planting of roses and prepare the soil.

Much loved and highly prized for their exquisite pre-Spring fragrance. Pink or white varieties are available, all endowed with their renowned fragrance. Prefer semi-shade and cool, lime free, well drained soil. Mulch well and feed with an acid-lovers fertiliser. They can be grown in pots. Plant Daphnes in a position where their fragrance can be enjoyed. Hardy. Evergreen.

Daphne odora LEUCANTHE… A neat, compact, rounded bush with erect leaves. Flowers are deep pink shaded white along the stems. 1m x 1m
