Natural Rhubarb InsecticideNatural Rhubarb Insecticide! Rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid, which is poisonous to humans if ingested, but used as a natural pesticide spray is extremely effective in removing unwanted bugs without killing the beneficial bees in your garden! The spray is easy to make! You will need... 1 cup of chopped rhubarb leaves 6 1/2 cups of water 1/4 cup of liquid detergent or soap flakes A large pot 1 spray or trigger bottle. Mark it as a poisons bottle so it is not used for anything else! We sell these empty bottles in our shops. Put the leaves in the pot and cover with the water, bring to the boil and boil for 20-30 mins. Remove from the heat and let cool. Once cooled, strain the liquid and add the soap flakes/detergent. Mix well and pour into your spray/trigger bottle. It is now ready to use. There is some debate about whether this spray is safe for food bearing plants, due to toxicity of the oxalic acid, but if you choose to use it in your veggie garden, remember to wash all picked fruit and veggies thoroughly before eating them. |
