October 13th 2011

Hi all,

Now is a really great time to plant! The soil temperature is warmer and new seedlings are loving the light rain. Last weekend I got stuck in and got the rest of the garden prepared for planting. The stores are full of great product, the staff are ready with expert advice and we are now open later so you can call in on the way home.

Summer trading Hours- 8.30am - 6pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All other days till 5pm

In Your Vege Garden

  • We have a wide range of Tomatoes ready for planting. Whether it's small single seedlings or superior grade Grafted Tomatoes we have them all. For optimum results when planting we recommend Tui Tomato Mix, specially formulated to ensure success. For planting advice Click Here
  • Grafted Aubergine (Egg Plant) in store now are stunning plants, well established and showing signs of flowering. I have planted mine in large pots with Kings Container Mix as I prefer to keep them in a sheltered position of the garden.
  • It's a great time to get a crop of  Beans in the garden. Climbing or dwarf? Climbing  will need a fence or framework to grow on that is strong enough to support the weight of the plants and fruit. Dwarf beans can be grown in rows in the veggie garden. Some small stakes may be required as a support. We have a full range of seeds and plants instore now!
  • Pak Choi is one of the first crops on my list. I grew these last year and within a month we were eating delicious supermarket sized heads. Roughly chop and toss in a hot frypan with a little butter, salt and pepper - 2-3 minutes and its ready.
  • Another crop I grew for the first time last year was Celeriac. Although not a fast crop, taking 6-7 months to mature, it is so rewarding. As a mild celery flavored mash it is a great accompaniment under Lamb shanks.
  • Tamarillo (Tree Tomato) are instore now. The large subtropical leaves and the rich juicy fruit make this fast growing tree a great addition for the garden. From the popular 'Teds Red' to the golden varieties like 'Bold Gold' and more.
  • Missed planting your Shallots? It's not too late, we have just received some small plants ready for the garden. Shallots are a culinary favorite and so easy and rewarding to grow!
  • Kumara plants have arrived instore. Plant in October and harvest around April. Tubers develop best in a light well-drained soil. Plant in mounds 7cm-10cm high to improve drainage.

In Your Flower Garden

  • Internationally recognised plant breeder, Dr Keith Hammett has bred a new range of  Dianthus, 'Scent from Heaven'. Bred for their compact and tidy habit they are a stunning addition to your garden. Unlike other Dianthus they flower almost continuously.
  • 'Bubblegums' Series Petunia have been bred for their free flowering qualities and disease resistance. They would be superb in baskets, containers or planted in garden beds. Come in today and view these three stunning colours, Blush, Fuchsia and Pink.
  • The magical Scabiosa'Blue Butterfly' will dazzle you with its lavender-blue pincushion flowers. Neat and compact, this hardy perennial will flower spring through summer.
  • Brighten up your pots and gardens with our fantastic range of Potted Colour. Marigolds, Petunias, Lobelia, Impatiens and more all at Kings Low Price $1.29each

In Your Garden

  • Looking for a project with the kids this school holidays? Swan plants are so rewarding to grow. Simply plant in the garden or large container and then wait for the monarch butterflies to lay their eggs. Months of entertainment with the transformation to a beautiful butterfly!
  • Hybrid Clematis, one of the most stunning climbers on the market. Large velvet-like blooms cover the delicate foliage. A stunning range of colours from pale blue, pink, to white will make this plant a feature in any garden.
  • The dramatic Echium 'Pride of Madeira' has tall electric blue, cone-shaped heads. Ideal for a sunny, well drained position in the garden.
  • Perfect for a semi shaded area in the garden, Liriope Muscari has brilliant blue grape hyacinth like flowers. Best when planted in groups or borders. Liriope is also a good choice for container gardening.
  • Enjoy the colour of Indoor Hydrangeas. Once they have finished flowering inside they can be hardened to the outdoor conditions and planted in a container or garden outside.
  • A stunning new blue flowered form of this garden favourite, Boronia 'Blue Wave'. Opening blue, and then turning shades of purple-mauve as the flowers age. Perfect for that sunny sheltered position in the garden.

In Your Garden Shed

  • Repel those insects this summer with this range of Citronella Candles. There are a number of styles to choose from including tealights, votives, flares, hanging candles and more.
  • Vegetable growing made easy! Hanging Tomato planters are a versatile solution and space saver for growing your own. This easy twin pack comes complete with watering tubes to ensure they get the moisture where they require it.
  • If your going away this summer, why not take the veggies with you. Easy lift Vegetable Planters are such a good solution. Made from rigid black plastic these strong planters have two handles for easy transportation. Get planting today!
  • If you've planted new seedling or perennials make sure you apply some Slug and Snail bait. With the damp weather they are out in force. Tui Quash is a great solution being safer for wildlife, pets and children. If you are still worried about pets eating the pellets then try placing the pellets in a Slug and Snail Trap.
