Hi All,
Happy New Year and welcome to the first newsletter for January. Summer has finally kicked off and there's never been a better time to cleanup and start planting new veges and flowers. With the weather we've had, it's been the perfect conditions for fungal diseases, so keep up with a regular fungal spray to prevent this and feed with a liquid plant food to aid plant health.
Next week will see the first of the Spring Bulbs arriving, so start preparing your garden and containers. If tropical plants like Palms, Frangipani, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Gardenia, Bird of Paradise are more your style then it's the perfect time to visit you nearest Kings. We have started the Palm Sale this week and the branches are full of great Palm deals and many other great tropical savings!

If you've just come back from your summer holidays and the vege garden is in need of an overhaul, then it's not too late. We still have a great range of vege seedlings available including dwarf beans, basil, celery, chives, parsley, silverbeet, spring onions and so many more. With the summer looking like it's going to be long and hot, fresh crops of veges will have plenty of time to mature.

Tomatoes will be fruiting heavily now so it's a great time to keep up the feeding. Kings Liquid Tomato Food is formulated to ensure the healthiest plant and top quality fruit, and used weekly you will reap the rewards!
-
A edible favourite of mine is the Chilean Guava. Perfect as a low growing hedge, container specimen or garden plant. They form an attractive plant to 1.5m high, glossy dark green leaves, with the new growth tinged red. Smothered in flowers, followed by fruit in February to March. Sweetly scented and the kids will love these tasty treats!

Mildew and Blight are two fungal diseases that a number of our customers have brought instore for identification. Mildew, a fine white powdery spot that starts to appear on the leaf and then spreads and Blight, a dark patch or spot that appears on the leaf or stems of crops like Tomatoes and can spread to the fruit causing brown rotting patches. Some products that will help with these problems are Liquid Copper - a natural fungicide and excellent as a preventative measure. For the Blight especially, another product that has been popular is the Yates Tomato Dust - No mixing involved, simply dust onto the plant. This product will also control caterpillars and other insects.

If your having other insect problems in the garden, a favourite spray of mine, especially for the vege garden is the Beat-a-bug Insect Spray. It comes in a ready to use trigger pack and is made of Garlic, Chilli and Natural Pyrethrum. It work well on controlling and repelling Aphids, White Fly, Thrips, Caterpillars, slugs, leafhoppers and more. Just wait one day after spraying before picking sprayed veges.
