Keep seedbed or tray evenly moist during germination period. Germination period is between 7-10 days. The plant needs consistent watering to set a good fruit crop, but cant take "wet feet". Where drainage is a problem, the plantings should be on a gentle slope, or the rows should be mounded. Irrigation can be cut back when the fruits are maturing. The plants become dormant during drought. Fertilising is not recommended. It encourages excessive vegetative growth and limits flowering and fruiting.
The Cape Gooseberry plant is a soft-wooded, perennial, vining plant that can reach 60-90cm high. Under good growing conditions it can reach 1.5 metres, but it will need support / stalking.
