Little Growers Activity: Growing Seeds in Egg Cartons

25 Jun, 2021

Growing seeds indoors is easy, and can help teach kids about germination and plant care. Many of us won’t have spare pots to grow seed in, but you can use different things that you might have around the house. Here we show you how you can grow seed using using an egg carton.

What you will need:

1 egg carton
Potting mix (or soft, well-draining soil)
A tray (over tray, or plastic box lid)

How you do it:

  1. Collect seed. These can be from old herbs or spent seasonal flowers, or you can purchase some.
  2. Research germination times. Finding out what seed you have and the germination times will give kids a timeframe for when they can expect to see sprouts.
  3. Cut the egg carton lengthways across the hinge. We will be using the bottom part of the carton, where the eggs are held.
  4. Fill the little pockets with soil.
  5. Poke small holes in the soil with your fingers.
  6. Plant the seeds in the holes. If they are small seeds, put a couple of seeds in each hole.
  7. Cover the seeds gently with a little more soil, taking care not to cover too thickly.
  8. Put the egg carton on the plastic tray and water the seeds.
  9. Place the tray in a north-facing window, and gently water every morning.
  10. Watch for sprouts!
